Jillian's Book Coaching Statement:

I am always delighted and honored when I have the chance to be a coach/midwife/editor/shaman to fellow writers. As a coach, I am enthusiastic in my use of cheerleading pom-poms, but also provide the incisive criticism so essential to creative growth.

I am obsessed with story structure. Don’t say “Hero’s Journey” to me after I’ve had a couple of drinks, unless you have an hour to sit and listen to me pontificate. I write both fiction and non-fiction, but my great passion is memoir and personal essay. I love helping people to discover the universal thread in their own personal truth, using the self to transcend the self.

I believe in garbage first drafts and tons of revisions.

My goal is for you to have a fully embodied experience of the creative process. I have a lot of non-traditional exercises in my wheelhouse and enjoy using archetypes and dreams as a way of accessing memory and voice. Don’t be surprised if I ask you to breathe. The body is one of our greatest recording devices– a goldmine of wisdom and emotion. And yet we hunch over our keyboards, barely taking a breath, carefully guarding the fortress wall we’ve erected between our bodies and our brains. By accessing our physical selves, we can become more connected with our authentic creative voice and learn to avoid cliché.

Some writers I admire are Nick Flynn, Mary Karr, Mary Gaitskill, John Jeremiah Sullivan, Joan Didion, Maxine Hong Kingston, Vivian Gornick, Rainer Maria Rilke, Sandra Cisneros, Albert Camus, and Tim O’Brien.

I don’t scare easily, and am comfortable working with sensitive or edgy material. I look forward to helping you tell your story.
